Medically misunderstood NOT medically unexplained

FND relates to a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain fails to send and receive messages correctly. Symptoms may appear similar to neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Epilepsy, and are associated with similar levels of disability and distress.

FND should be diagnosed by a Neurologist and the diagnosis should be made on the basis of positive signs of the disorder.

FND is a recognised disorder in its own right. It should not be confused with Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) which is a catch all diagnosis used when doctors simply don’t know what is wrong.
