Julie’s Story | FND Awareness Day UK 2026

A personal story of living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
~~~
I first was diagnosed with FND December 2022, stroke like symptoms, hospitalised unable to walk, tremors, speech difficulties. Discharged after 2 weeks, told to look at website & explore FND.
Walking and speech improves, tremors diminish. After 9 months, walking without a stick, working & symptoms almost gone. 5 months later, March 2024, had episode on bus, which lead to me collapsing when I got off the bus. Ambulance called, husband came and rather than go to hospital my husband took me home, took a week to recover and I was due to back work the following week. Then the day before I was due back, I felt unwell, had a sore throat and fever. I couldn’t stop shaking, headache & all I wanted to do was lay down. I laid on my bed shaking, drifting in & out of consciousness. My husband called ambulance, 5 hour wait, ambulance finally came. I was unable to weight bare, walk and shaking uncontrollably. I had a high temperature & paramedics thought I might have an infection and as I couldn’t walk it was decided I would go to hospital as I was not safe at home. At hospital tests done, no infection, all normal. Although there was no available room for me in any ward, I was keep in a sideward off A&E, for 2 days.
When I was beginning to walk with Zimmer and eating better I was allowed to go home. 2 years later I am still struggling. I am noise & light sensitive, which cause tremors. Walk with stick or Rollater.
