Andrew’s Story | FND Awareness Day UK 2026

A personal story of living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
~~~
I fell from a building in 1986 at the age of 10. I have had problems all my life with chronic pain and having cognitive problems. Shaking twitching, waking up feeling like someone’s ripping my leg off.
I have seen many specialists over the years. When I was young I was told it’s growing pains or restless leg syndrome. I always felt like I was just brushed off. Fast forward to 2024. My now ex partner took a few videos of me, hardly being able to stand and my whole body convulsing. My neurologist said straight away I know what this is. After 38 years I was diagnosed with FND, FMD and CRPS! I was told this stems from the accident in 1986.
I have had no help since that day. The neurologist set a 3 part plan for me. Chronic pain management, physiotherapy and psychotherapy. 5 mins in psychotherapy and pain management. Psychotherapy (the one I feel I need most) sent a letter to me and my neurologist saying they cannot see me or help me until the pain is managed! I can’t take anymore medication as it leaves me like a zombie.
So I’m really struggling, even more so since the diagnosis. Now my partner wants me out and I’m facing having to leave my kids, my pets and my home.
FND sucks!
